Ask the Readers: How Fast is Your Internet Speed?

How fast is your internet connection speed? This week we want to know how fast yours is and show how to go about testing it and getting best results.

With so many readers from all over the world, we thought it would be fun to have you guys show us how fast your internet is. There are so many different types of connections, from Verizon FIOS to DSL, and some folks are still on dial-up, believe it or not.

Of course everyone has a different ISP’s like the popular Comcast, Time Warner, Google Fiber (if you’re lucky), or lesser known local or municipal providers.

There are a lot of different services online that will test and show you your upload and download speeds, but for this, we’d like everyone to use the popular SpeedTest.net. It allows you to test your speeds from your location to various parts of the country and even the world. For best results, pick a location closest to you.

Test your Internet Connection Speed

Using SpeedTest is easy. Just go to speedtest.net and select Begin Test – your current location should already be selected.

Begin internet speed Test

After starting the test, it will display a meter with info on how it’s going. It will test your download speed first, then your upload speed.

Upload speeds

If you do want to test the speeds against other parts of the world, just move the green location mark at the bottom as shown below.

SpedTest

After it’s complete, click on “Share This Result”, and copy the link and paste it into the comments. Then we can all compare our speeds and have a little fun!

Do keep in mind it will take us some time to approve comments, so please be patient if you don’t see the results right away.

Results

Some tips to keep in mind for getting the best results:

  • Stop any service that is using bandwidth on your computer or network, i.e., Netflix, Spotify, backup software…etc.
  • Make sure your kid or roommate isn’t on another computer downloading torrents or using a bandwidth hog like Netflix or Amazon Video.
  • Definitely make sure your computer is hardwired and you’re not using Wi-Fi.

If this is the first time you’ve tested your connection speed, make sure to read our article on understanding your speed test results.

Let’s have some fun guys! Use the comments below to show your test or just type in the results you see if you don’t want to link to it in the comments.

      57M and 11M down — not bad.

I’m going to test mine once I get home. Here at work, my corporate connection is not very realistic….

Haha watching Xfinity ad about blazing fast speeds while burning up an hour d/l’ing a 300mb file. Ran multiple speed tests on various servers and the fastest I came up with is: dl 0.61 Mpbs up 0.34 Mpbs. My Comcast bill ($80 a month!) states “high speed Internet” but no specifics about what speed that means. Each call to Comcast gets a different answer – usually “you have the fastest” followed by “want to upgrade”, but no explanations on what the differences would be! Website says the highest charge for Blast is $64 so I must be in a special category of “Fool me twice shame on me” by being a loyal customer.

My blazingly fast speed test had only one PC on my networkh nothing else running but speedtest. (And I’ve had multiple desktops, laptops tablets with different hw and OS’s, changed out routers and modems so if it’s my hardware I must have the worst luck ever).

Never thought I’d go the ATT route but even if it’s dogslow, I would save enough each month on Directv/Comcast bills to pay for gas to drive to McD or the library to use a faster connection :)

Wow Emma — That is slower than dial-up.

First thing I would try is a reboot of everything. Your Comcast Router, Wireless Router and your computer. If that doesn’t fix things, call Comcast back and don’t hang up until they get you to a manager. There is seriously something BROKEN!!!

Pretty good, considering it’s exactly what my ISP contract says I’m given. Really happy with my upload speeds, too.

Wow, not bad at all Stefan. I’m going to guess you’re faster than my home connection (from last time I looked….).

    Well folks,

remember I live in the sticks in rural MN and to be honest I am lucky to even have DSL. The guy down the road from me…about a mile can only get dial up or do the HughesNet … which is PURE crap!

      July 30, 2014 at 4:55 pm

btw, speaking of Hughes satellite internet, check out their prices page: http://www.hughesnet.com/ It’s really a sad state of affairs, but I guess if that’s what ya gotta do….

Back in my early days of IT, I paid my dues working a help desk for a national chain of stores that had a contract with Hughes for its stores…LOL VSAT man. Everyday, and I mean every day, there was an outage somewhere in the country. If it snows, you have to climb up on your roof and clear the snow off the dish…

Anyway, those days are long gone. Done with Rant.

Wow… your upload blows dude. At least you have good download tho… Hmmm problem with the sticks is there is just no density so there is no money in upgrading the infrastructure. bummer…

Good lord! 91.26mpbs download??? That is nuts. What tech is that to your home? Fiber?

      How much does that cost?

      • Ziggy

        August 3, 2014 at 12:15 am

Provider is Telstra Bigpond, Australia. Copper cable to modem to pc, costing $136.00 per month (Australian dollars) which includes landline costs on a 200 gig plan.

The current Australian government is planning to upgrade the copper network to fiber. The plan is to have fiber to the node and then copper to the home – bit nutty, but we’ll see what happens!

We have gigabit in Romania. The price for it is about ~11$ on month. So we download with 100-120 mbps..thanks to RDS Romania :)

I’m in Romania and it’s fiber optics (I happen to live in the city where the biggest ISP is). The funny thing is that this is through a 30 meter cable, connected to my router. If I connect directly, I can probably get closer to 1 Gbps.
It’s actually not expensive, around $18/month.

25 megs down, 6 megs up on fibre-to-the-cabinet on all my computers. UK ISP Plusnet. Cabinet a few hundred yards away, so result looks about right. Happy with price also.

    Scottsdale, Arizona. Residential neighborhood.

    CenturyLink DSL:
    14 down, 0.85 up.

Pathetic upload speed because CenturyLink is too cheap to upgrade their boards. Maybe I should mention that folks in Romania, Thailand and remote NZ get better speeds that in this metro area.

I could get higher speeds with Cox cable, but their reliability, latency and jitter are horrible. So I stick with a $28 reliable DSL, even though the upload capabilities are reminiscent of the 1990s.
