Spotify Premium is now baked into your Amazon Echo. Previously you could play music from Spotify but had to stream it Echo from your phone via Bluetooth.

The Amazon Echo is the company’s smart speaker that includes the digital assistant called “Alexa”, and it’s gaining new skills weekly. Since the Echo was released, you could play your music and other audio from your Amazon Music collection, audiobooks from Audible, Podcasts from TuneIn, Pandora, and others.

And now, the Spotify service is baked in, and you can play music directly from the streaming music service. Previously you could play music from Spotify but had to stream it from your phone or other mobile devices via Bluetooth to the Echo.

Note: For this to work, you will need to be subscribed to Spotify Premium, which is $9.99/month.

The addition of Spotify is great because the number of albums and artists on Amazon Music is limited. The only drawback is that you do need to be a Spotify Premium member, but you can always try the premium mode free for 30 days to see if you like it.

As I mentioned previously, new features are being added to the Amazon Echo on a weekly basis. Another thing you’ll want to check out is new Echo Skills. Since the company opened the API to developers, a lot of interesting and fun Skills have been added. My current favorite is playing Jeopardy.

Since so many new features and skills get added all the time, an easy way to keep up with everything is to ask: “Alexa, what new can you do?” Another useful resource to find out what’s new with Echo is this Amazon page.
