Microsoft is Pre-loading Windows 10 On Reserved PCs, Check if You Have It

To get ready for the official Windows 10 launch tomorrow, Microsoft is getting a head start on the massive deployment, and pre-loading the upgrade files.

Windows 10 is officially launching tomorrow, and to get a head start on the massive deployment, the company is pre-loading the upgrade files on user’s PCs that reserved it via the Get Windows 10 App.

Even though the bits are starting to roll out to select users, not everyone will be getting them, and not everyone will be able to upgrade right away.

Microsoft is rolling out the update in waves. The first ones to get it will be Windows Insiders. After that, it will go out to those who have a valid version of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 and reserved their copy.

If you’re wondering if your upgrade files have been pre-loaded, here’s how to check.

Windows 10 Pre-loaded?

The first thing you want to do is make sure your Folder Options are set to show hidden items. To do that in Windows 7, click the Start button and type: folder options into search, and hit Enter.

sshot-1

That opens up Folder Options. Click the View tab, scroll down a bit, and select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

sshot-2

To get to Folder Options in Windows 8.1, open File Explorer and select View > Options > Change folder and search options from the Ribbon. And then select the same option showed in the shot above.

Windows 8 file explorer

If you have the files, open your local C: drive in File Explorer, and you should see a folder named $Windows.~BT. That’s where Windows 10 is being stored temporarily until the actual update takes place. On my Lenovo Flex 2 convertible laptop running 64-bit Windows, the size is close to 4 GB; other users have reported larger, some smaller.

Don’t try to run any of the files in this folder, thinking you can kick off an early install…because you can’t. But at least you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you should be ready to go for tomorrow…or not.

On my Windows 8.1 install, I have the $Windows.~BT folder and it’s 5.91 Gigs in size (17,019 files). On my Windows 10 Insiders box however, it’s only 1 Gig…

My Windows 8.1 box, the folder shows a creation date of 7/10/2015 at 6am. So I’m going to guess they have been trickling this in for a while. That said, I think the folder has been updated since the initial push since many of the files show a modified date of today.

Interesting, looking forward to see how the upgrade goes later tonight.

I have talked to some people on Twitter, and every person is telling me a different size. It depends on your device, the version (64 or 32- bit). I’m assuming that if you don’t have all of the bits yet, it will be a different size. For example, on on of my computers, it was 2 GB earlier today, and is now just over 4 GB

Yep, have that folder but mine is only 140 meg. Must be in it’s initial phase.

Thanks for the info on this one as I’ll be keeping a close eye on it now that I know how to find it.

Since my last post the folder has now clicked over to 3 gig and, if I leave the properties file dialogue open, I can see it clicking over and growing in size!

I checked to see if I had the downloaded file, according to your instructions above, but it appears that I don’t have it downloaded yet. I did reserve a copy. I noticed this morning, the 29th that my icon in the task bar is missing now. It’s strange that the icon is missing, it has been there for several weeks now, since I reserved my copy.

All 15,545 files are there–now what?

Run Windows Update and you should see it ready to install.
