All good. No issues so far! And thanks for the very detailed information provided, Brian. I’m pleasantly surprised by just how good Win 10 has been for my old laptop – and I mean OLD laptop! Best move I’ve made.

Won’t install for me. Reboots, ends up saying failed to update, reverting changes. Computer is working fine though. Currently on version 1607 Build 14393.187

Same problem with me. Let me know if you find a solution.

What normally solves this problem is to go to this folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
and delete ALL the files in the Download folder then reboot and go to update and it then usually installs ok.

Works fine without issue after install and reboot; however, it did seem to take a bit longer than usual but I am not sure of the size of the total file.

      September 30, 2016 at 7:43 am

@Elyod. On my machine it was 758 megabytes. Hence the longish install.

For those getting stuck at whatever percentage, I’ve always found getting the direct installer from Microsoft resolving that issue. Just google the appropriate kb (3194496) and head over to Microsoft for the 64 bit or 32 bit installer.

If Brian is tuned in, he should be able to provide the direct link for those having difficulty installing this kb. Where are you Brian?

The update download on my laptop has been stuck on 45% and is using the entire internet bandwidth. Please help in stopping this download.

      September 30, 2016 at 3:14 am

It stopped on my old Dell laptop at 15%, and stayed there for 4 hours. Clt-alt-delete didn’t respond, so I powered down/ up, and the update began again. This time it finished. On my PC, it stopped at 45%, but I was able to choose reboot. It began again, and this time completed successfully. However, I’m still getting the windows DDE.server error associated with auto-hide tool bar that began after the 1607 update.

Same is happening with me too. Stuck on 45% and eating up all my internet. I stopped the update from “services” in the “administrative tools” option in the control panel but still something is using all my bandwidth. Can someone help?

I’m getting loads of issues, my razer firefly isn’t being picked up on the synapse after the update (and I’ve installed all new updates to both and not fixed the issue), chrome keeps crashing, my files and file paths have been changed and are now using the wrong storage (apps downloads etc are saving on the SSD rather than my hard-drive) wireless driver keeps crashing after the update also, constantly have to restart. Not happy whatsoever.

I found the problem in my case.
I use third-party firewall, so I deactivate the Windows firewall directly in services. After turning ON everything works.

I did install on my desktop pc and laptop, both went well.
    Good luck guys!

Best of all for me, this update fixed my Logitech webcam problems. Thousands of people found that their Logitech webcam software for taking photos/video wouldn’t even load after the Anniversary Update. Now my cam and software work again.

Terrible mouse and input lag after auto-restart. Control panel is blank. Trying desperately to uninstall but without input devices, it’s difficult.

Touchpad is now misbehaving, the “volume button” light no longer works and the battery is not charging.

All of this happened after the install of KB3194496 last night. UGH!

Installed quickly with no problems. However, my touchscreen has not worked since the Anniv update. This update did not fix it either.

Most odd. Got update last night it seemed. Hung long time at shutdown Program Manager message. Left it for bed and must have finally turned off. During am use along comes the old black screen of death from Win 10 x64 Pro & Nvidia GTX 950. Tons of msgs about 900 Series and flashing black screen or freezes while audio still works. This one took cold boot. Disabled the graphic driver like after last big MS AU. Try to go to my webmail that feeds Outlook 2016 and site wouldn’t take my password. Had to create new one.
hmm thinking before the update last night I had a black screen flicker & when screen returned I had desktop icons turn all fuzzy. Logout & return no fix, must reboot. But I had left graphics driver in place (lastest one). Anyway runs ok when disabled. So many web posts that finally seem to point to MS update screwing that Series. People have done all kinds of changes to PSU, mobo etc. to no avail. Thing is the 2 powersaving fans never even spin on during boot up or unless temp hits a certain high point when in Windows. Tried noddling the driver’s control panel settings and manuf s/w program but no go. Built-in o/c on h/w so screw the s/w. Didn’t work by uninstalling w/ Revo, Windows tries to reuse it. Leave installed & Disable. This assumes card even feeds monitor. Lot users seeing messages about No Signal from monitor during boot up. I got that in BSOD from monitor as it turned off soon after boot up.
So for me these Updates are getting to be royal pain.

Well, Microsoft is treating Windows 10 like a service. So it;s not always going to work perfectly on every system (as always) you can always defer updates if you are running the pro version (this might work for home users, too. not sure):

I just installed the update and now my laptop keeps coming up with the message that Windows has experienced a problem and needs to restart. Been doing this all morning. Did a system restore as I was unaware what the problem was to start with and that sorted things out until it did the update again. I can’t find anywhere in windows update settings to turn off auto updates. What can I do as I need my laptop daily

Word is that Microsoft is investigating the problem and that a fix should be on its way! Advice from Microsoft Community Forums is not to install it.

Microsoft’s “wushowhide.diagcab” tool will help you to hide this kb and prevent it from installing.

Still scratching my head as to how M/S can get these updates so horribly wrong on some computers and not others. My understanding (according to sources I’ve referenced) is “that this cumulative update actually experienced the exact same issues when being tested as part of the Windows Insider program, but Microsoft shipped it anyway.”

No problems. Once the download finally occurred, it took less than 30 mins on my several-years-old laptop. So far, everthing seems to be working normally.

Update installed, but on reboot, my start menu and taskbar icons were all messed up. On next reboot, it went back to normal, almost … I have lost my sticky notes completely. I had quite a few on my desktop that were very useful, but now they are gone. I was using the computer since then and it suddenly shut down completely while I was in the middle of using it. Turning it back on didn’t work on first try but switched off and back on again, then was ok. Still no sticky notes though. They are listed in my programmes and I have tried clicking on it and have also pinned to the task bar, but they won’t open.

Apparently there is a workaround being touted at Microsoft Community Forums. It involves deleting a particular folder and a registry entry. But the best advice is to ignore it and avoid installing this kb until a fix is provided by Microsoft, which will most likely be shipped with the next cumulative update around about the 11th October – Patch Tuesday.

If you find the fix at the forums page, make sure you know what you are doing and have an system image or a restore point that you can go back to.

Personally, I would wait for the fix in preference to mucking around with a “possible” fix that apparently works on all versions of Win 10 – just be patient!

Update: I did a Google search for the problem with the Sticky Notes and while I didn’t get an answer that fixed my problem directly, it did prompt me to look at my system differently. I discovered that there was a folder named Windows.old that was time stamped the same day as the current windows that contains the update. In the old folder, I found stikynot.exe in the System32 folder and copied it into the new windows system32 folder. My old sticky notes are all back. Phew.

Has been running for 24 hours. Black screen with dotted circles running. I cannot power off at all. I let the battery die out on my laptop purposely to shut down, but when I plugged it in and hit my start button, message attempting to find installation, the screen went dark again with those darn circles. I hate windows 10 and cannot get my laptop functioning again. I need help.

Windows update KB3194496 installed on my Lenovo AIO on 9/29 and machine is now at build 14393.222. Update took a very long time, but it did install successfully. HOWEVER, now the windows tiles in the touchscreen part of monitor are gone. Also, start menu does not show all apps as it did before. Search window has been replaced by Cortana. How do I get my touchscreen back? How do I get the start button to show apps, settings, etc? This last update is a disaster.

Installed with problems on my Dell Inspiron 5748. Same problem with black screen with dotted circles running. Hard to hard start to complete the install. Now loosing wifi network connections. Only way to reconnect with my router is to restart or hard start. VERY frustrating.
